  1. Anyone else hearing rumors from El Paso County that Doug Lamborn will not run for Congress to support Ted Haggard?  Did he say that in the news???

  2. Jack,

I had not heard that about lamborn, but it would not surprise me. Lamborn is best known for his “social-conservative” stannds in the legislature against gays, abortion, and immigration. I am sure by now he has been advised by someone in the GOP that that his extremist views, while popular in his state senate district will go against him in the larger Congressional District.

CD5 has enough area outside of Focus on the Family control, that a successful candidate needs to be sympathetic to their causes, but not stress them in his/her campaign. A successful candidate will do his best to emulate Joel Hefley and stress things like ethics, support for the military (including their dependants), and reducing wasteful gov’t spending.

As a Democrat, I have no illusions of a possible Dem win there, but I would like to see a GOP candidate who can represent ALL of his/her constituents. While I didagree with Hefley on several political points, I do admire him for some of the staces he has taken, particularly in  his role as chairman of the Ethics Committee.

  3. Ralph of “Makes Me Ralph” fame might be the new Ralph of the progressive community blog Soapblox Colorado.  Phoenix Rising, can you confirm or deny this?  Does he plan to make archives of Makes Me Ralph available?

  4. I have serious doubts that the highwonks of the GOP have talked to Lamborn about his “extremist” views.  Many of the middle ground R’s like Lamborn because of his strong stances on taxes, transportation and education. The GOP knows the area and also knows that Lamborn is their best bet. While Pastor Haggard is a great conservative, I hope he would be the one stepping aside in support of Doug Lamobrn

  5. FROM GALLUP.COM

56% of the country want the troops in Iraq to leave the country right now.

SO, what are the candidates saying, and what are their opinions?

  6. August 9, 2005 …

3.11 for a gallon of gasoline in Manhatten, NY

Maybe, a change is necessary in our foreign policy?

And, how is the environment, air quality?  The energy BILL is a good first step, but it is hardly the solution … fast enough.  We should be building several nuclear facilities for the production of hydrogen, to fuel our cars, trucks and aircraft.  And, we should be converting our gasoline stations and cars TEN years ago, but the CONSERVATIVES were thinking about protecting BIG OIL.

  7. David –
I don’t really have a Dem in mind for CD5. I suspect it will be the same as last year: at the last minute the party will find a sacrifical donkey to run there.

I would like to see a strong Dem run though; someone who would make the GOP candidate break a sweat winning the district.

  8. Intern, paid. Congressman Joel Hefley (R-CO) has an opening for 1 Intern for Fall 2005 (August 29- December 16) in his Washington D.C. office. Duties include investigating constituent requests, drafting correspondence, answering telephones, entering data, greeting visitors, giving tours of the Capitol, assisting press/legislative/administrative staff, attending hearings, and aiding the Congressman directly. Interns may also be assigned longer-term research projects. A qualified candidate must have exceptional communication, computer, and administrative skills. Energetic self-starters looking for hands-on experience are encouraged to apply to this fast-paced office. Colorado ties a plus. Salary: $1,200/month.
Please email cover letter and resume to heather.mcmonigle@mail.house.gov.

  9. A NATIONAL SECURITY THREAT?

CNN IS REPORTING THAT ON THURSDAY, CINDY SHEEHAN WILL BE CONSIDERED A NATIONAL SECURITY THREAT FOR WISHING TO TALK WITH THE PRESIDENT ABOUT THE LOSS OF HER SON IN THE IRAQI WAR.

AMAZING ON HOW YOU CAN SERVE THE COUNTRY, AND YOUR MOTHER CAN BECOME A NATIONAL SECURITY THREAT FOR DYING IN ANOTHER COUNTRY, AND BE AGAINST A WAR AND A PRESIDENT’S DECISION TO GO INTO THAT WAR.

NO DOUBT, A MOTHER OF A DEAD MARINE HAS LITTLE PROTECTION UNDER THE FREEDOM OF SPEECH???

  11. Jay Fawcett, a former Air Force Academy instructor / veteran of the first wave of Operation Desert Storm, is touring the 5th District and talking to voters.  While he has not officially made any announcement, he’s talking an awful lot like a candidate for Congress, whether Hefley retires or not.

… and he’s a Democrat.  Especially given the “right” Republican nominee, he could make this an awfully interesting race.

It sure would be nice to see Pols add him to the CD-5 line.  They’ve got some much longer shots listed on some of their other lines. HINT, HINT!!!

  12. Hey, I see the asterisk on the line changes showing Beauprez announced.  Can anyone tell me where I can find his announcement for Governor?

  13. Another WILD story from CNN today:

Illegal Alien’s are available in Illinois, Wisconsin and California (soon in CA) to purchase homes and receive loans from the Federal Government.  This is against the law for Fanny Mae.  However, these states are breaking those laws.

Currently, over 216,000 illegal aliens have been approved for loans.  And, the middle class in the US has not seen any increase in salaries since 2000, but the country has seen more than a 20% increase in home cost purchases nationally.  The average home purchase price nationally is now more than 225,000.  It seems that illegals have the incomes to purchase homes, with grants and loans, but for some American citizens, they do not.  Thus, the country is beginning to become a place for illegals to own the American dream, but the legal middle class Americans can not?

  14. BIN LAID IN.

TEST: ARE YOU IN FAVOR OF INTERNATIONAL PEACE, WAR, OR THE CHILDREN?

A little girl (7 years old) and boy (5 years old) were found lost in the Sahara desert without any water or food, repeating over and over “Where is Bin Laden, where is Bin Laden?”  Finally, after months without any clothes or someone to rescue to them, an angel appeared before them.  The Angel said,”My children,
children, where are your parents and why have they not taken care of you?”

The children then said, “Our parents were killed in a war between rebels in the Sudan … and, we are refuges from the radical terrorists that occupy our country.”

The Angel then said, “Oh my, yes … and, who is this man named Bin Laden that you are speaking about?”

The Children say, “We don’t know, we just remember these people from America visiting from another land, saying to repeat over and over, it is Bin Laden, it is Bin Laden.”

The Angel then says, “hum, I wonder if these people have mistaken the name, and meant Been Laid In, Been Laid in … meaning the people of the Sudan, who have been buried into the ground due to the waring countries around the globe?”

The Children then say, “We are for peace, because we have nothing … we only have ourselves, without much in consideration.”

The Angel, “My dear children, please turn your faith to the BIBLE and GOD, which says you will be blessed in Heaven … as your parents are.  And, certainly, the churches of the world will come through for you … because they are not interested that you are a DEMOCRAT, REPUBLICAN OR A SOUTHERN BAPTIST …

The Children then interrupt the ANGEL ………

“NOR, ARE THEY SUPPORTIVE OF INTERNATIONAL PEACE … THEY SPEAK FOR THE BUSH ADMINISTRATION AND THEMSELVES TOO.”

    BIN LAID IN.

  15. Peter,

    I’m with the children.

I have two who are the joy and focus of my life.

    Do you have children?

Frankly, I found being a father drastically changed my outlook on the world.

    Peace.

  16. No, I have no children.  However, I have a much greater experience in my life.  I was blinded for ten years and received corneal transplants in both eyes from two different people and families to get my vision back.  I saw a face in my first surgery, so I know that something exists for all of us after this world.  I feel strongly that I must seek a way to keep the world at peace … it is strong.

I love children, even though I have none … it makes me cry to think that 11.7 million of them are dying from starvation in Africa.  We must stop spending money on war, we need to think about the children.

    God Bless You

  17. Peter: FYI, President Bush has done more to promote self-sustaining economic development in Africa than any other American president ever has. He has already sent more than $1 billion to Africa for humanitarian aid and has earmarked over $1 billion more to fight malaria. He has send hundreds of millions to fight famine, improve education, and improve development. He led the G-8 to cancel 100% of bi- and multilateral debt to the poorest countries in Africa. And while these initiatives, as well as others such as the Millennium Challenge accounts, probably will not change your mind, I just wanted to squeeze in a couple of actual facts between all of these rants.

  18. Peter:
If you really love Colorado (and this country) as much as your alter ego, aka Herb Rubenstein, you’ll convince him not to run for congress. We all understand that Herb wants to make America a better place for everyone, but in reality he’s just making a mockery of himself.
Help Herb save face and help support your party by thinning the field. Convince Herb to end his run; he was cute for awhile, but “Herb” is quickly becoming a clich

  19. Dear Defero:

In my opinion, President Bush has had a difficult set of circumstances.  This is an extremely difficult time in the history of the world.  Everyone plays a role, the world does not revolve around one, but the many.  Yes, President Bush has begun the process to help the people in Africa.  Yes, in many things he has done great good.  However, fighting fire with fire only brings more fire.  The answer for the world is in the realization that the people who live anywhere around the world are just like you and me, they just have the difference in language, education and knowledge from their parents.  If we were not diverse in our thinking, we would have little to grow and understand.  However, we can accept our differences and tolerate those who are different with love and compassion.  Just because someone is different, does not make them evil or unjust to their thoughts on how the world should be.  If the world could experience being blinded, to think that your life was over and that you could not contribute, then you would understand what many children also feel.  Yet, even more than that, the children don’t understand the reasons for such pain.  They are innocent and fragile, just like the elderly.

President Bush has great amounts of distrust for the countries outside of ours.  In many ways, I don’t blame him.  But, we are also teaching these other countries to have little trust in us.  This is where fear of the world takes over and we become our own worst enemy, to ourselves.  We must realize that the FEAR of others is what the devil wishes us to embrace.  If we embrace LOVE, then we are safe from Armageddon and the end of the world.

It is really easy to embrace Love over Hatred.

  20. I will not stand in the way of anyone in a Democratic process.  The people are the voice of that decision and have the “choice” of voting for the right person.

I have faith in our American system of Democracy, even though in my opinion, Vice President Al Gore would have been a better Leader for our nation.

  21. Fighting fire with fire… what? Look, I appreciate the warm thoughts but your previous posts haven’t exactly overflowed with love and joy. If we are to help Africa then we need to help their people become economically self-sustaining and that is what President Bush and other world leaders are doing. You can give a man a fish and feed him for a day or you can teach him to fish and feed him for a lifetime…

  22. In my opinion, the world should not allow the Iranians to have nuclear weapons … indeed, why should anyone have them?  In this regard, President Bush is correct, in my opinion, they have only the aim of using them, if they acquire them.

  23. It’s obvious Peter is a ranter.

What we call a useful idiot.

They rant so predictably that people dismiss anything they may say. Even it has merit.

Keep u the Good Work Peter!

    We love you.

  24. PPPE,

If you are trying to convert me to the REPUBLICAN PARTY, that idea lost the minute President Bush took office and went on his vacation, then 911 happened.

  25. Mr. Peter Lobster,

If the world destroys itself, then we are pretty much guaranteed that the Lobsters will enherit the earth, along with all the cock roaches, since they can handle 10,000 times the amount of radiation that we can.

    No rehabilitation necessary.

  26. WHAT IS THIS ?  VERY INTERESTING …

Congressman: U.S. Intel Knew 9/11 Plotters
Congressman Says Defense Intel Knew, Monitored 9/11 Hijackers in U.S. a Year Before the Attacks

By KIMBERLY HEFLING Associated Press Writer

WASHINGTON Aug 9, 2005 ? The Sept. 11 commission will investigate a claim that U.S. defense intelligence officials identified ringleader Mohammed Atta and three other hijackers as a likely part of an al-Qaida cell more than a year before the hijackings but didn’t forward the information to law enforcement.

Rep. Curt Weldon, R-Pa. and vice chairman of the House Armed Services and Homeland Security committees, said Tuesday the men were identified in 1999 by a classified military intelligence unit known as “Able Danger.” If true, that’s an earlier link to al-Qaida than any previously disclosed intelligence about Atta.
